Mado Jolain (1921-2019)

Born in 1921, Mado Jolain studied ceramics in Paris, later establishing her studio with husband René Legrand in 1946. Influenced by folk art and artists like Paul Beyer, her early work featured tableware and religious sculptures before evolving towards decorative pieces with abstract designs. Experimenting with form and monochromatic glazing, she found success at Parisian exhibitions and galleries. Transitioning to utilitarian outdoor ceramics in the late 1950s, Jolain continued to innovate until retiring in 1970, leaving a legacy celebrated in retrospectives in 2000 and 2016.
